Elkhart Central (26) @ South Bend Adams (29)
The game was played at School Field in South Bend. A small locker room next to the field was our dressing room. No towels were provided. Drinks at half time were commandeered by the R & HL at the concession stand. The shower was hot. I met with the game clock timer, but not with the play clock operator, prior to the game. No issues with either clock operator. The chain crew was comprised of any three people they could find. Only three persons could be found. Down box man did double duty as the clip man & the down box man. No issues with the chain crew. The field had a small pond (water and mud) near the free kick line on one side. Whenever there was a free kick from that end, we moved the ball over towards the hash mark, to avoid the pond. The same theory was used on normal plays that occurred in that area of the field. All the QB's, place kickers and punters were RH or RF. There were seven total penalties called in the game. Four were on EC (encroachment, running into the kicker, an unsportsmanlike on a player, and a false start. Three fouls were assessed against SBA (holding (2), and an unsportsmanlike on a player). The crew had a replacement with Rickey Elko filling in as the BJ. The only unusual play that occurred was on a scrimmage kick by SBA from EC's @ 45 yard line. The ball hit the wet ground and took a crazy bounce that glanced off of the BJ around the 5 yard line. The ball stayed out of the EZ and ended up at the EC 3 yard line. I do not know if the kick would have made it into the EZ or not, if it hadn't touched the official. Elkhart fans didn't enjoy that execution. No side line warnings were issued. Two players were given unsportsmanlike fouls (one of each team at different times of the game) for their language toward the officials or toward their opponents. Nice job by the crew in letting the play dictate what had to be called.
